Using authentic songs

How to use songs in the languages classroom for all ages and abilities.

I have recently discovered the fantastic young singer Erza Muqoli and have been having great fun playing her songs to my Year 3 and 4 classes. Please find below links to some of her songs and ideas for exploiting them.

In terms of exploiting the song, I focused on the 'eu' sound as i comes up so much in the chorus and did our phonic mimes every time we heard it. I then taught the following key words- mieux, les yeux, heureux- and we did actions when we heard them. With older students it would be possible to translate more of the song and exploit key words and vocabulary to a greater extent. It is also possible to gain a genuine response to the song in the target language, e.g. J'aime la chanson car c'est....
