Signals for silence

The importance of establishing a consistent signal for silence

Since working with younger learners I have found a consistent and clear signal for silence to be very important.
The signal I use is 'Trois, deux, un, zéro, stop et écoutez!" with actions- a finger count down, hand up for 'stop' and hands on ears for 'écoutez'. I explain to the children that once the signal is finished, 3 things need to happen- eyes on me, voices off and hands empty. I also expect them to join in with the signal and actions.
